Turkey Is Not For Thanksgiving

November 26th, 2013

Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

For some people, there is nothing that strikes fear into the heart faster than the thought of having to cook Thanksgiving dinner. I fear a few things, but cooking isn’t one of them.

That because I grew up observing my mother. For a month she’d prep and plan out the entire menu, and then enlist the help of us kids, who were excited to chip in any way they could so we could sample along the way.

One by one, she assigned each of us a task and outlined instructions to make sure nothing was missed. We would parade in and out of the kitchen completing our assignments as mom worked endlessly to make sure that she had every dish in the works.

I’m from the midwest so a typical menu consists of mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, yeast rolls, savory stuffing cooking inside the bird, and a smoked turkey along with various deserts. Ah! The deserts!

In all the hustle and bustle, I can’t remember if there was any major mishap. There were times when deserts wouldn’t turn out just right or once when it took longer to smoke the turkey than expected. But, can you imagine a beautiful Thanksgiving spread without the main attraction?

Of course, we could have a laugh around the table, and all things considered, we probably had more than enough to eat! I mean did we really need a baked turkey AND a smoked turkey? That reality didn’t relieve the frustration or change the fact that turkey would be served late in the day instead of when everybody was sitting at the set table.

It’s easy to be thankful when you have more than enough, but true gratitude is when we offer thanks to God in all circumstances. Happy Thanksgiving.
