Does God Bring Us Adversity?

January 30th, 2015

You meant evil against me, but God meant it for good. Genesis 50:20

Since arriving in Palm Beach County, I have happily been busy visiting friends. I am lucky enough to have friends of many different cultural/religious backgrounds and interests. Yet, something I’ve noticed in my conversations is that every one of them has been up against some adversity over the past year. One dear friend, knowing I’m a believer, asked me if God brought on the struggle.

Joseph’s life story instantly comes to mind when people ask me about God’s role in the midst of adversity. I think his clearly illustrates how God uses adversity to accomplish ultimate good.

Joseph’s brothers hated him, left him for dead AND sold him into slavery to an officer of Pharaoh, where he rose to a place of power. Pharaoh’s wife falsely accused him of rape and Joseph was thrown into prison where he correctly interpreted Pharaoh’s dream after years of imprisonment. In His time, God reversed Joseph’s adversity. After interpreting the dream, Pharaoh made Joseph prime minister and he was able to use his authority to help his family through the famine.

So even in the dark and painful times, Joseph realized that God had been in control at all times. Likewise, nothing happens to us apart from God’s will and plan. As believers we will face adversity, but it remains subject to God’s Grace. He never leaves us. He never loses control over our circumstances.

We must understand that God sometimes permits adversity to enter our lives. He uses adversity to fulfill His purposes in us and through us in His time. It’s not if we’ll have adversity, it’s when and how we’ll handle it with Grace.
