Whoever goes about slandering reveals secrets; therefore do not associate with a simple babbler. Proverb 20:19
One of the things that can destroy any church or ministry is gossip. Gossip divides communities. Gossip destroys relationships. It’s one of the enemy’s greatest weapons.
It seems so harmless at first, just passing along something we find amusing, or have seen or heard. Haven’t we all been guilty of giving a benefit of the doubt to someone we know and like and cast a bad light on those we don’t necessarily care for in conversation? Before long, the conversation can be a subtle but effective form of character assassination. And without realizing it we’re modeling our behavior to those around us.
To be honest gossiping can feel good, even self-righteous, to point out another person’s faults. Our TV and social media seem to glorify gossip. But in the end, we all suffer: victim, speaker, listener. Lord, during this Lenten season save us from the scourge of gossip. Amen
